She was a Quaker. She was disowned by the Quakers for marrying a man outside her faith, and so was her mother for permitting her daughter to do so.
* Note: From time to time the family has a legend that states Margaret and Nancy Hanks are sisters, but it seems to be they are cousins. Nancy Hanks was Abraham Lincoln's mother. It has been agreed upon but never fully proven that Nancy Hanks parents were Joseph Hanks and Nancy Shipley. The family was Quaker Margaret and her mother were disavowed because her mother had married a man not a "member of our society", this was Margarets father William and from then on for many generations the family were devout Methodist Episcopalins.
