Misc. Notes
The maiden name of Mary Coles is known from her marriage record and the Cherrington research and is confirmed by the family record of her son Thomas Cherrington in the Exeter Monthly Meeting of Friends
10. In the court and marriage records of Berks County we find a great deal of information on Mary's apparent relationship to Daniel Coles b. 171210 and Solomon Coles b. Jan 10, 1710/1110 who we note were both born shortly before Mary. On Sep 12, 1744 Robert and Mary Matthews sell 60 acres of the original land grant to Robert Patterson (Berks Co., Pennsylvania,
Deed Book 11, p. 357 -358). Land which by this date borders that of Daniel Coles who in April 174210 married Dinah Boone the daughter of George Boone and Deborah Howell. After the death of Daniel Coles in 174910 Dinah Boone married Adino Williams about Oct 175110. Dinah was the sister of William Boone who was apparently the guardian of Robert and Mary Matthews' children Townsend and Amelia (See
Matthews v. Warren Exhibit C - Robert Matthews Inventory, May 1754). Daniel Coles' brother Solomon died Jul 2, 174610 and his widow Martha Coles married Jun 6, 174810,
11 John Hughes the son the Ellis Hughes and Jane Foulke. On Dec 10, 175510 Robert Dickey, husband of Amelia Matthews, is recorded as a witness at the marriage of John Hughes' brother Samuel and Margaret (Gethin) May which seems only explainable by the common Coles ancestry. We find further evidence of the Cole family relationship in the administration of John Matthews and his wife Sarah both of whom apparently died in early 1760. On Apr 12, 1760 William Boone and Samuel Hughes are appraisers of the
Inventory of the Estate of Sarah Matthews widow of John Matthews. On
Jun 25, 1760 administration of John Matthews estate is granted to “Clement Cherrington and Mary his wife and to Townsend Matthews, said Mary being the mother and said Townsend the bro. of intestate.” John Hughes, Townsend Matthews, and Robert Dickey are
Administration bondsmen for the estate of John Matthews.
